Our local Y did not allow swimmies or arm floats and recommended the swim vest instead. I was afraid that my 5, almost 6 year old would feel uncomfortable in the vest since most kids his age do not need such a device. However, speedo has such a wonderful variety of style and "big boy" designs, that my son never became upset when he put it on or when he played with his peers. It has given him the confidence in the water to concentrate on swimming and safety techniques while giving me a greater sense of security with both my kids saftey. This vest is only for helping beginner swimmers, and not for boats or used as perservers. It is not a full lifejacket but rather a very lightweight "shirt" vest that zippers in the front like a jacket and buckles under the legs.
