4.0 out of 5 stars Gorilla Congo III (Costco Variant), September 8, 2010

I spent several months researching the ideal swing set and even contemplated building my own. My wife talked me into the Congo III after she saw it go on sale.

First off - wow, I am so glad I didn't attempt to build my own. This is a smaller set and it still took about 24 man hours to assemble. It is also rock solid. I could not have built something similar from scratch at the price Costco was offering it for (even at full retail).

A lot of the research I did suggested that big box retailers only offered shoddy designs with cheap materials - but the quality of wood was amazing. Very few knots in the wood - and very straight.

There are a few misgivings I have about this particular swingset.

1) The stain/sealant applied to the wood is very sparse and rubs off easily. I spent 2-3 hours applying my own coat of sealant after assembly.

2) The torque nuts had to be machined with a Dremel tool in order to fit all of the screw heads. This... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid this Swing Set, March 30, 2011
= Durability:1.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Gorilla Playsets Outing III Playground System (Misc.)
I bought this set 3 years ago and it is already falling apart. The wood is rotting, warping and splitting and the tarp on top only lasted about a year and a half. My kids will only use the swings as the clubhouse is a splinter factory.

If you want a fun little swing set that you only need for 2 years, this will do but its alot of money. It took a good 10 hours to assemble and I only needed a second person a couple of times for a few minutes. If you want something that will last, get one made of cedar. Don't buy into this pre-treated pine.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really Good Playset, October 22, 2010
= Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:4.0 out of 5 stars
We bought the Gorilla Playsets Congo Outing III in early October 2010 and put it together shortly after receiving it. The playset was received in excellent condition with all parts (even some extra hardware). The wood quality (cedar)was very good. Everything was pre-drilled as marked and all parts will easily identifiable by tags. Although it was advised that it would take 5-7 hours to install, it took two reasonably competent men about 9 hours minus a 45 minute lunch from breaking the boxes open to putting the tools away. The 3D instructions were very well written and we followed the required tool list and had everything that was required. We did take about 45 minutes to sort all the parts before starting and the leveling after Step 8 took us nearly an hour. If your installation spot is completely flat you might be able to make the 7 hours. Also perhaps being anal engineers we leveled the set on all planes to within 1/4". All went together very smoothly and only some of the... Read more
